Art is to look at not to criticize.
The good ideas will survive.
To me, movies and music go hand in hand. When I'm writing a script, one of the first things I do is find the music I'm going to play for the opening sequence.
I hope to give you at least 15 more years of movies. I`m not going to be this old guy that keeps cranking them out. My plan is to have a theater by that time in some small town and I will be the manager this crazy old movie guy.
I don't judge my characters, and that's my job not to judge them. It's my job to treat them with respect and to just look at it from their point of view.
If the film is nominated for awards, and even if it wins them, it doesn't make the movie any better, just as if it's ignored that doesn't make the movie any worse.
When it came to a lot of these German actors with the English, they just couldn't do it. They couldn't get the poetry out of it. They couldn't own it and make it their own. And then Christoph [Waltz] came in, and I didn't know who Christoph was.
Everybody has to get up and do their jobs to get things together, and that's it. And I've always been able to find a location with friendly people I've worked with before, and then they like to participate in the profits and so on.
I'm not a frustrated concert composer, and the concert pieces I've done have been a small part of my work. What I've sought there is instruction, variation from the demands of film and relief from its restrictions.
If I'm out in the country or something, I'm still spooked by snakes.
I paint flowers so they will not die.
