It's possible to make sense of what's morally at stake in an appreciation of the gift of life, or the gift of a child, without necessarily presupposing that there is a giver. What matters is that the gift - in this case, the child - not be wholly our own doing, our own product.
By my 40s, I finally got out of my own way, so I could become a life creator; a life giver.
God's grace and forgiveness, while free to the recipient, are always costly for the giver.
In the world take always the position of the giver.
The gift without the giver is rare.
I'm honestly not a great gift giver. I could give better - my girlfriends have always complained about that.
If everyting's the same, then there aren't any choices! I want to wake up in the morning and decide things!" (Jonas) "It's the choosing that's imortant, isn't it?" The Giver asked him.
I tend not to think about audience when I'm writing. Many people who read "The Giver" now have their own kids who are reading it. Even from the beginning, the book attracted an audience beyond a child audience.
The man that I named the Giver passed along to the boy knowledge, history, memories, color, pain, laughter, love, and truth. Every time you place a book in the hands of a child, you do the same thing. It is very risky. But each time a child opens a book, he pushes open the gate that separates him from Elsewhere. It gives him choices. It gives him freedom. Those are magnificent, wonderfully unsafe things. [from her Newberry Award acceptance speech]
Grace makes you gracious. The Giver makes you give.
I'm basically a gift-giver.
The mind can’t explain it, and you can’t make it go away. It’s called love.
When you're a good giver you're a good getter.
The critic's hankering to be law-giver rather than servant of literature is irrepressible.
Everybody knows the Lord loveth a cheerful giver.
True kindness ennobles the giver
Religion supports nobody. It has to be supported. It produces no wheat, no corn; it ploughs no land; it fells no forests. It is a perpetual mendicant. It lives on the labors of others, and then has the arrogance to pretend that it supports the giver.
The Sun is the sole inconsumable fireAnd God is the sole inexhaustible Giver.
My concept of an advice giver had been a therapist or a know-it-all, and then I realized nobody listens to the know-it-alls. You turn to the people you know, the friend who has been in the thick of it or messed up - and I'm that person for sure.
And it´s so different for a lot of people I´ve known. One partner doesn´t love the other enough to stop drinking, or gambling, or running around with other women. One is the giver and one is the taker. The giver wishes the taker would stop.
