John Wesley (28 June [O.S. 17 June] 1703 – 2 March 1791) was an English cleric and theologian who, with his brother Charles and fellow cleric George Whitefield, founded Methodism.
Employ whatever God has entrusted you with, in doing good, all possible good, in every possible kind and degree.
Always remember the essence of Christian holiness is simplicity and purity: one design, one desire: entire devotion to God.
All that a Christian does, even in eating and sleeping, is prayer, when it is done in simplicity, according to the order of God, without either adding to or diminishing from it by his own choice.
If we cannot think alike, at least we may love alike; and can anything but love beget love?
Do all the good you can, by all the means you can.
The best helps to growth in grace are the ill usage, the affronts, and the losses which befall us. We should receive them with all thankfulness, as preferable to all others, were it only on this account, that our will has no part therein.
For as long as love takes up the whole heart, what room is there for sin therein?
Prayer continues in the desire of the heart, though the understanding be employed on outward things.
As long as you feel your own weakness and helplessness, you will find help from above.
Read the most useful books, and that regularly and constantly.
The Bible must be the invention of either good men or angels, bad men or devils, or of God. It could not be the invention of good men or angels, for they neither would or could make a book, and tell lies all the time they were writing it, saying, 'Thus saith the Lord,' when it was their own invention. It could not be the invention of bad men or devils, for they would not make a book which commands all duty, forbids all sin, and condemns their souls to hell for all eternity. Therefore, I draw this conclusion, that the Bible must be given by divine inspiration.
About three in the morning as we were continuing instant in prayer, the power of God came mightily upon us, insomuch that many cried out for exceeding joy, and many fell to the ground. As soon as we recovered a little from the awe and amazement at the presence of His Majesty, we broke out with one voice, 'We praise Thee, O God, we acknowledge Thee to be the Lord. '
Vice does not lose its character by becoming fashionable.
God does nothing but by prayer, and everything with it.
You have nothing to do but to save souls. Therefore spend and be spent in this work. And go not only to those that need you, but to those that need you most. It is not your business to preach so many times, and to take care of this or that society; but to save as many souls as you can; to bring as many sinners as you possibly can to repentance.
I believe in my heart that faith in Jesus Christ can and will lead us beyond an exclusive concern for the well-being of other human beings to the broader concern for the well-being of the birds in our backyards, the fish in our rivers, and every living creature on the face of the earth.
It is good to renew ourselves, from time to time, by closely examining the state of our souls, as if we had never done it before; for nothing tends more to the full assurance of faith, than to keep ourselves by this means in humility, and the exercise of all good works.
One of the greatest evidences of God's love to those that love him is, to send them afflictions, with grace to bear them.
Beware you be not swallowed up in books! An ounce of love is worth a pound of knowledge.
You have one business on earth – to save souls.
