We toured that record for a year, which turned out to be the culmination of ten years of being constantly on the road. We were sick to death of touring.
So when you start touring, women are definitely going to check you out first.
I was just staying home and getting stoned and drinking. It was a pretty rough period. I think that's kind of the whole theme of Indestructible Machine, how when you have social anxiety, you can sort of convince yourself that you've gotten over it by drinking a bottle of whiskey, but once you sober up you're still terrified of everything. Hence you're treating your body like it will never die. I think I have gotten better, just from touring so much, but I still definitely have the skittish nature.
Duncan Aldrich has been my partner in most recording projects, and touring projects, for the past decade.
I love playing and I like traveling. I really do like playing in Canada, its not to diminish anywhere else because touring internationally can be cool.
You never get tired of the buzz of touring.
If I completely understood what was going on and I understood these songs, they wouldn't make sense to play live anymore. They're still enigmatic for me. I'm still searching in the songs as they are. That's what's actually been the most fun about playing and touring for me is that there's still a lot of caverns in the songs where you can go and hide out different nights.
Touring can be tough; the crew and I travel everywhere by a big pink bus, and live in petrol stations.
If I'm not touring I'd just be at home, just driving - I'm kind of at a loss for how that stuff works.
You have to be able to grow and move with the organism that is the music industry. You need to maintain flexibility. Ownership of your own stuff is key and then you're able to dictate on a present-terms basis what would be the most effective way to protect yourself and what you've created. You also don't want to lock yourself into a situation where a major label owns part of your touring and merchandise.
I think every touring musician sacrifices aspects of their life to do it.
Touring doesn't kill me and I can handle it.
I enjoy touring and traveling because that's the time when I get to read, and listen to music. You have all that downtime, which is great for that.
In a nut shell, air travel is the worst part about touring.
My favourite thing about touring is really the shows, because early on you can say it's definitely things like travel and seeing the world and stuff like that, but over time you don't really get to see the world. The most important thing in the day is the show. So that's why I do it.
INXS’ touring days could never last forever. We wanted it to end on a high. And it has.
When you're a touring musician, you're always turning over new rocks and there's always a certain level of tension in your life.
I think when you're drinking you don't have the clarity to think about things. It's not easy to talk about obviously but I think quitting drinking was one of the most important decisions I've ever made for myself. It's not easy, especially when I'm touring and everyone is partying and I'm backstage playing Scrabble or drawing in my notebook because I'm a total nerd now.
You want to make music that reflects your ideals, but considering the isolating process of recording and the time and energy requirements of touring, there aren't a lot of opportunities to express those ideals anywhere but the music itself.
I like touring, I like being in the studio, a bit of both. I like to have a bit of time at home as well.
