When I was a kid you didn't have Twitter or Instagram where as soon as you walk out of a building a photo of you is up within two minutes or a million people are commenting and saying nasty things. I found a different confidence because I realized that you can't base your self-worth on the opinions of others.
Analysis of rebellion leads at least to the suspicion that, contrary to the postulates of contemporary thought, a human nature does exist, as the Greeks believed. Why rebel if there is nothing permanent in oneself worth preserving?. . . Rebellion, though apparently negative, since it creates nothing, is profoundly positive in that it reveals the part of man which must always be defended.
If my sense of security lies in my reputation or in the things I have, my life will be in a constant state of threat and jeopardy-a fear that these possessions may be lost, stolen, or devalued. If I'm in the presence of someone of greater net worth, fame, or status, I feel inferior. If I'm in the presence of someone of lesser net worth, fame or status, I feel superior. My sense of self-worth constantly fluctu-ates. I don't have any sense of constancy, anchorage, or persistent selfhood. I am constantly trying to protect and insure my assets, properties, securities, position, or reputation.
True abundance isn't based on our net worth, it's based on our self-worth.
Self worth and net worth are not the same.
With material wealth and in a culture where many of us defines our self-worth by what we have and what we own and what we achieve, it's very hard to comprehend that there are enclaves all over our big country in which people are very purposefully choosing to maintain different values.
It's almost like a sign of mental illness to base your self-worth on the opinions of complete strangers, you know?
Self worth is everything. Without it life is a misery.
The Government honoring our treaties and sovereignty is first and foremost. These issues are still the top priority which [Barak] Obama, if elected, has promised us. For us, we should implement the most impor-tant programs right now: they are programs to teach the children a positive sense of dignity, self-worth, and the importance of sustaining their culture, history, language and honor as a people.
It is very important that, no matter what happens, you keep your feeling of self worth and value.
I refused to worry about something I could not change, and I still refuse. Look, I'm like any other woman. All this evolved b. s. that I'm telling you is my mantra. It's not something I practice naturally. I had to surrender to not worrying about the way I looked, how much I weighed, because that's just part of the journey of having a baby. I am not a woman whose self-worth comes from her dress size.
All the research shows that being married, with all its ups and downs, is by far the most effective way of making young men law-abiding and giving them a sense of purpose and self-worth.
And as a writer, your self-worth is literally based on the last thing you wrote.
Being right is less important to us than the freedom to be wrong.
I know, now, without a doubt that the true source of happiness, self-worth, and authentic beauty doesn't come from the outside. Women are constantly being persuaded to want something unachievable, to look younger or thinner and above all to fit in because being different is too painful and embarassing. I have accepted myself in a world that does not accept me, because I have learned [. . . ] that our hearts matter most. . . It's a beautiful heart, not a perfect body, that leads to a beautiful life.
Human beings are not comparable. You can't compare us any more than you can compare roses and oranges, or mountains and the sea. You might prefer living by the sea to living in the mountains. You certainly like some people better than you like others. Preferences are perfectly valid. . . they're just your style asserting itself again. But you'd feel pretty silly saying 'The sea is better than the mountains. ' It's every bit as silly to go around saying 'I'm better than Mary, but Joe is better than me. '
There is no easy formula for determining right and wrong livelihood, but it is essential to keep the question alive. To return the sense of dignity and honor to manhood, we have to stop pretending that we can make a living at something that is trivial or destructive and still have sense of legitimate self-worth. A society in which vocation and job are separated for most people gradually creates an economy that is often devoid of spirit, one that frequently fills our pocketbooks at the cost of emptying our souls.
When you please others in hopes of being accepted, you lose you self-worth in the process.
In a society that judges self-worth on productivity, it's no wonder we fall prey to the misconception that the more we do, the more we're worth
Your self-worth is determined by you. You don't have to depend on someone to tell you who you are.
