I would love to say that the world is changing in the movie industry for people of color, women, the LGBTQ community and other minorities since I began my career, and that we are evolving as a species, but I think that given this social and political climate, I'm at a loss. It's like running a marathon and thinking you're halfway done and you can see the finish line - but the finish line is actually the first checkpoint.
Presently we're seeing these kinds of battles for our most vulnerable students - such as Trans and LGBTQ students. You have a lot of conservative parentsschool boards making life much harder for these children by trying to ensure bullying remains in place.
I'm most proud of my work in the LGBTQ space. Feels like, above all else, that's something I want to do for the rest of my life.
My mother has often said that the issue of women is the unfinished business of the 21st century. That is certainly true. But so, too, are the issues of LGBTQ rights the unfinished business of the 21st century.
I will work tirelessly to defend all communities, including the LGBTQ one, from terrorism and violence.
I think, for one, the LGBTQ community is just a paragon of leadership, of standing up and saying "these are our rights, and we deserve them. " As a model of activism, it's so wonderful what the community has been able to achieve towards goals like marriage equality.
