Going to another country doesn’t make any difference. I’ve tried all that. You can’t get away from yourself by moving from one place to another. There’s nothing to that.

You take [mammary] cells, you put them in a dish, and within three days. . . they don't make milk. They completely forget.
Context overrides. In different contexts, cells do different things.
I came to writing mysteries through poetry and still think that a well-constructed mystery is very much like a well-constructed sonnet. Both are artificial forms. Both start off in one direction and then, with a twist of the concluding coupletsurprising ending, both reveal that they were headed somewhere different all the time.
I always keep moments that were defining for me in my past and challenged me in my past - from getting evicted out of my apartment when I was 14 years old, to being cut from the CFL [Canadian Football League] and only having 7 bucks in my pocket, to bouts with depression - I keep moments like that very close to me because it continues to be great motivators for me. It helps keep me grounded, and it's a good reminder of how things work, and I never want to go back to that.
It's pitching, hitting and defense that wins. Any two can win. All three make you unbeatable.
