Every war is ironic because every war is worse than expected. Every war constitutes an irony of situation because its means are so melodramatically disproportionate to its presumed ends.
All language is but a poor translation.
I like the story about me being pregnant. It was in some Australian magazine, on the front page! I was like, 'Wow, that's just [insane]. ' And it's not even ironic. I don't even think the article [tried to justify it]; it was just a headline. The article was just like, nothing.
One of the real costs of the war is that our security is actually less than it otherwise would have been - ironic, since enhancing security was one of the reasons for going to war. Our armed forces have been depleted - we have been wearing out equipment and using up munitions faster than we have been replacing them; the armed forces face difficult problems in recruitment -by any objective measures, including those used by the armed forces, quality has deteriorated significantly.
Who would have ever thought I'd be afraid of a zombie, any kind of zombie? Nicely ironic that.
I don't think the nature of my poetry is satirical or even ironic, I think it's essentially lyrical but again I don't know if it's my position to say what my poetry is like.
There's not a lot of room for un-ironic emotion in contemporary culture. I think that irony is an important tool in dealing with the world as we find it. It's a tool of protection, but it can also be a tool of incision to get to some truth. But along the way maybe we've lost some of what I think of as the power of straightforward emotion and earnestness and seriousness.
We become lost in being everywhere but here and now, and the ironic part is that the present is the only place that will make us feel better.
What we have learned to look for in a situation determines mostly what we see.
I would say my work is anti-ironic.
(Farm workers) are involved in the planting and the cultivation and the harvesting of the greatest abundance of food known in this society. They bring in so much food to feed you and me and the whole country and enough food to export to other places. The ironic thing and the tragic thing is that after they make this tremendous contribution, they don't have any money or any food left for themselves.
I would not wish to be Prime Minister, dear.
Ironic, huh? To keep that part of me alive, I have to be close to that which kills it.
I drink to forget I drink.
My first concert isn't that cool or ironic. I wish it had been like, "My first concert was the Backstreet Boys," but the first concert I went to, I think, was this band called The Samples.
I say let the world go to hell, but I should always have my tea.
Another hard thing that Gord Downie makes easy: singing ironically. If you don't do it right, you come off like a snarky asshole or the whole thing just falls apart on its own. He has the ability to imbue something ironic with great seriousness, which is the only way to really make it work.
