Rowland Kelechukwu "Kele" Okereke (born 13 October 1981), also known by the mononym Kele, is an English musician, best known as the lead singer and rhythm guitarist of the indie rock band Bloc Party.
I never understood the low arthigh art distinction. I think there's real currency in pop culture. We read trashy magazines as much as the next person. So I never saw the point in listening to only one thing. That low arthigh art distinction comes from the establishment telling me how I'm supposed to think.
I have a real problem with rock music because it seems that lineage doesn't really exist. When you grow up, you're told that rock 'n' roll is the only authentic way to express yourself. Live instrumentation, singer, live drums. You're told that's the best medium to communicate. So much of modern rock is referencing music from 20 years ago.
I’ve been into clubbing for years. I’ve said from the beginning I’m into dance, it gets me excited and I think this record is going to go some way to prove that to people, hopefully.
When I think of Britain, I don't think of these lofty ideals which once held sway like the stoic upper lip. I think of girls on a Saturday night outside kebab shops stabbing each other with stiletto heels or guys smashing glasses into someone's face. I think of shows like Big Brother which celebrate people's discomfort and anguish or kids committing these terrifying happy slapping acts of brutality to each other at the drop of a hat.
