I'll take anything and slap it on a canvas.
You're not directing an actor toward a thing they can't achieve. Because direction is elusive. When directors hold respect for the various craftsmen and -women who are telling the story, it's the greatest result. I think people do their bravest work when given an elusive canvas.
The artist discards all theories, both his own and those of others. He forgets everything when he is in front of his canvas.
I say that whoever claims to have finished a canvas is terribly arrogant.
There are only two things worse then an empty canvas: death and taxes.
It is a good thing to stand away from the canvas from time to time and take a full view of the picture.
To end up with a canvas that is no less beautiful than the empty canvas is to begin with.
When I stand before a canvas, I never know what I'll do, and I am the first one surprised at what comes out.
It is not enough for a painter to be a clever craftsman; he must love to 'caress' his canvas, too.
This is the swamp as I see it, but what I can’t capture on canvas is you as I see you. No brush or paint will ever show the hero that you are. It will never be able to portray the sound of your voice when you whisper my name. The way my skin tingles when you touch me. The passion of you inside me. I love you, Talon. I know that I can’t keep you. No one can ever tame a wild beast. You have a job to do and so do I. I only hope that when you think of me, it’ll bring a smile to your face. Love always, Sunshine. One thing is sure - we have to transform the three-dimensional world of objects into the two-dimensional world of the canvas. . . . To transform three into two dimensions is for me an experience full of magic in which I glimpse for a moment that fourth dimension which my whole being is seeking.
Just dash something down if you see a blank canvas staring at you with a certain imbecility. You do not know how paralyzing it is, that staring of a blank canvas which says to the painter: you don't know anything.
Just as hundreds of brushstrokes comprised a finished canvas, people were made up of a lifetime of experiences, both good and bad. And without knowing what someone had endured, it was impossible to truly know them - and accept them - for who they were.
The Bible, undoubtedly, is a mixed bag. I don't see myself coming back to the Church. I do like the tradition. If you come from a strong culture, you can decide what you agree with and what you don't agree with. If you're given a blank canvas, it's almost harder in life.
I don't know in advance what I am going to put on canvas any more than I decide beforehand what colours I am going to use.
Never knowingly leave anything wrong on your canvas.
He made his colours, built his stretchers, plastered his canvas, painted his pictures, carpentered his frames, and painted them. 'Too bad I can't buy my own pictures,' he murmured aloud. 'Then I'd be completely self-sufficient. '
What I did for my last act as a painter, if you call me a painter, was to photograph the weave of the canvas, and enlarge it and enlarge it until it became like a landscape.
Jazz can be a blank canvas full of possibilities.
